Agency, freelancer or in-house: whom to choose
We are an agency, and we do not always win this comparison. For some businesses a freelancer or an in-house specialist is genuinely the better choice, and we will say which.

Three options in numbers
Roughly, for a business with an ad budget of $1,000-5,000 per month in Ukraine.
| Freelancer | Agency | In-house specialist | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | $200-600 | $400-1,500 | $800-2,000 plus taxes and a workplace |
| Who does the hands-on work | One person | A specialist plus oversight | One person |
| Projects handled at once | 5-15 | 3-8 per specialist | 1 |
| What happens if they fall ill | Pause | Cover | Pause |
| Creatives, site, analytics | Usually separate | Usually included | Separate or DIY |
| Depth of product knowledge | Low | Medium | High |
| Time to start | A week | One to two weeks | One to three months to hire and onboard |
When a freelancer is better
- Budget under $1,000 per month and one channel.
- You understand ads yourself and are ready to supervise.
- You need a seasonal launch or a test, not ongoing work.
- You have a specific person recommended by a business similar to yours.
Risk: dependence on one person. A holiday, an illness, a new big client, and your project is on pause. Second risk: accounts owned by the freelancer. Check this before starting.
When an agency is better
- Several channels at once: ads, website, social, reputation.
- Budget from $1,000-2,000 per month, where the cost of a mistake exceeds the fee.
- You need predictability: a report on the same day, cover, a contract.
- No time to manage contractors.
Risk: the conveyor belt. In big agencies one specialist runs 20-30 projects and yours is looked at once a week. Ask directly how many projects the person running yours has. If more than ten, that is a freelancer with a markup.
When in-house is better
- Ads are the main sales channel and the budget is $5,000-10,000+ per month.
- The product is complex and knowing it matters more than knowing the ad platform.
- You need daily work with sales, content and CRM.
Risk: one person cannot be strong in Google, Meta, analytics and creatives at the same time. So an in-house marketer often manages contractors rather than replacing them. And they have to be found, which takes one to three months.
Questions worth asking anyone
- Whose name will the ad accounts be in? Right answer: yours.
- What will the weekly report contain? Right answer: spend, leads, cost per lead, what changed.
- How many projects does the person who will run mine handle?
- What will you do if the economics do not add up after two months?
- What is not included in the price?
Whoever answers all five confidently is someone you can work with, whatever the format.
Our honest position
We are an agency where one specialist runs up to 5 projects, accounts are always in the client’s name, and we are the first to say when it is time to stop. If your budget is under $500 and one channel, we honestly recommend a referred freelancer, or our free audit so you can launch yourself.
